9 Questions need to Ask While Choosing a Pre-school

While choosing a school for higher grades, parents pay attention to many things: academic board, teaching style, choice of subjects, student-teacher ratio, etc.

When it comes to choosing a preschool, the situation changes considerably.

Parents think that pre-school is less about education and more about learning basics like the alphabet and numbers. Therefore, they don't know what questions to ask when deciding about a pre-school.

To them all preschools look the same. Some have more colorful books. Some people insist that children wear uniforms. Some have long working hours.

If you are confused about pre-schools, here is a list of questions that can serve as a checklist for you.

  1. Are the children active, happy, playful? Most children do not like the idea of going to school. They cry outside the school for several days before entering the school. While crying is inevitable, find out if babies calm down after a while. Or does their attendance at school cause them trouble at home?
  2. If the child hesitates to jump around, is he forced to play or dance? Are such reserved children given their place?
  3. Is every child treated equally? No one is special, yet everyone is special. Some parents may try to get some extra favors. Is this encouraged in school?
  4. When an extraordinary situation arises, such as an emergency or illness, is the school prepared to consider this? Do teachers help when a child cannot go to school? How do they help kids catch up with their missed work?
  5. Do teachers take parents into confidence? Do they talk openly with parents about their children? How aware are they of your child's personality? Do their observations differ from yours?
  6. Do parents take teachers into confidence? Can parents talk openly to teachers? Teachers should keep their attitude sweet towards their work and children.
  7. Is there a playground? Is the infrastructure safe? Are the classrooms colored? Is the furniture kid sized?
  8. Is the support staff caring? Teachers undergo some training in child care; Non-teaching staff members do not do so. If non-teaching staff are looking after the children, it means they feel at home.
  9. What does school teach? Or does it allow children to learn? There is a huge difference between teaching approach and learning approach. The teaching approach is teacher-centred and the learning approach is student-centred.

There is no way you can get all your questions answered in one counseling session. Some of these you will only be able to see for a short period of time before and after meeting with the counsellors. You can contact parents whose children are studying in the school or have studied there previously.
